Single-channel video as part of Scripted Reality: The Life and Art of Television

Museo Jumex

Mexico City, MX

Museo Jumex presents Scripted Reality: The Life and Art of Television, an international contemporary art exhibition that surveys the history of television and explores television’s impact on daily life.

As a major cultural component of the contemporary period, television plays a definitive role in visual culture, the circulation of news, and the forging of identities off-screen. Installed in Museo Jumex’s 3rd floor gallery and presented in collaboration with Fundación Televisa, Scripted Reality considers the work of artists from the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa who have engaged with this vital medium. Exploring TV’s rich and varied history through installation, performance, painting and video, the artists of Scripted Reality present television as object, medium and subject.

Since the 1950s, television has been utilized as a means to transmit works of art beyond the gallery walls and present a subject in its own right. Scripted Reality reflects television’s own globalized worldview, one that is equally influenced by local conditions of broadcast and reception up to the present day. The exhibition title is derived from a recent cultural theory that investigates how television continues to simultaneously represents and shapes contemporary experience and behavior, particularly in the wake of reality television and social media.

The exhibition includes installations, photographs, sculptures and videos that portray television’s many roles in society. These include works made for television and transmitted within shows and advertisement breaks to interrupt the flow of programming that characterizes today’s media landscape. In turn three ‘channels’ of artist videos present thematic programs that address particular forms and genres that refer back to the day-to-day experience of television.

Artists include: Candice Breitz, Robert Boyd, Miguel Calderón, Phil Collins, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Christian Jankowski, Bruce Nauman, Yoshua Okón, Nam June Paik, Laure Prouvost, Abigail Reyes, James Turrell, Bruce Yonemoto, and others.

Scripted Reality is organized by Kit Hammonds, Curator, and Adriana Kuri Alamillo, Curatorial Assistant, Museo Jumex in collaboration with Fundación Televisa. CATALOG
